Do you need a permit to carry a gun in your car in Iowa?
No. Since July 1, 2021, Iowa’s permitless carry law (codified at Iowa Code §724.5) lets an adult who is legally allowed to possess a firearm carry a handgun — concealed or openly — without a license. And as of July 1, 2025, House File 924 lowered the carry age from 21 to 18.
An optional Permit to Carry is still available and worth a hard look: it provides reciprocity when traveling, keeps you clear of the federal Gun-Free School Zone rules (the 1,000-foot zone around K-12 schools that permitless carry does not exempt you from), and streamlines handgun purchases.
Loaded or unloaded? Open or concealed?
Iowa does not require the handgun to be unloaded, and it does not force you to choose concealed or open in your vehicle — both are legal for an eligible carrier. You can keep a loaded handgun:
- holstered in plain view (including in a cup holder holster)
- concealed on your person, or
- in the console, glovebox, or elsewhere in the vehicle
Because open carry is legal, a holstered handgun in the open is fine — no concealment requirement to work around.
What about drivers 18 to 20?
As of July 1, 2025, drivers 18 and older who can legally possess a firearm may carry under Iowa’s permitless law — HF 924 removed the old 21+ threshold. One federal wrinkle remains: licensed dealers still can’t sell a handgun to anyone under 21, so 18-to-20-year-olds must acquire one through private transfer or gift. Carrying it, though, is legal.
Who can’t carry in a vehicle
Permitless carry applies to people who can lawfully possess a firearm. It does not extend to prohibited persons — for example, those with a disqualifying felony conviction or another state/federal disqualifier. Iowa also bars carrying while intoxicated.
Where you still can’t take it
Permitless carry doesn’t override location limits. Iowa still restricts firearms in places like K-12 school grounds (where the federal 1,000-foot Gun-Free School Zone rule catches permitless carriers — a Permit to Carry exempts you), courthouses, casinos and gambling facilities, secured federal buildings, and private property posted against weapons. Carrying in your car gets you there; it doesn’t get you inside a prohibited place.
