Is It Legal to Carry a Gun in Your Car in Utah? (2026)
Short answer: Yes. Since Utah’s permitless-carry law took effect in 2021, an eligible adult 21 or older can keep a loaded handgun in a vehicle they lawfully possess — openly or concealed — with no permit required. A holstered handgun sitting in plain view is legal here. Here’s the detail for 2026.
Do you need a permit to carry a gun in your car in Utah?
No — not if you’re 21 or older and legally able to possess a firearm. Utah’s 2021 permitless-carry law (HB 60) removed the license requirement for eligible adults, and the vehicle statute, Utah Code §76-10-505, allows carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle that’s in your lawful possession (or with the consent of whoever lawfully possesses it).
Before 2021, Utah made you choose: get a permit, or keep the gun in that awkward “Utah unloaded” condition. That’s gone for eligible adults 21+ — loaded is legal, open or concealed.
Utah’s Concealed Firearm Permit is still available and popular, mainly for reciprocity (it’s one of the most widely honored permits in the country) and a few in-state perks.
Loaded or unloaded? Open or concealed?
For an eligible adult 21+, Utah does not require the handgun to be unloaded, and it doesn’t force you to choose open or concealed in your own vehicle. You can keep a loaded handgun:
- holstered in plain view (including in a cup holder holster),
- concealed on your person, or
- in the console, glovebox, or elsewhere in the vehicle.
Because open carry is legal for eligible adults, a holstered handgun visible in your cup holder isn’t fighting any concealment requirement.
A note on drivers 18 to 20
Utah’s permitless carry starts at 21. Adults 18 to 20 can apply for a provisional permit to carry concealed, and the rules around loaded and open carry for that age group have extra wrinkles. If you’re under 21, get the provisional permit and confirm the current requirements before carrying loaded in a vehicle.
Who can’t carry in a vehicle
The permitless-carry protection applies to people who can lawfully possess a firearm. It does not extend to prohibited or restricted persons under Utah or federal law — for example, those with a disqualifying felony conviction. It also assumes the vehicle is lawfully yours to use: §76-10-505 ties loaded vehicle carry to lawful possession of the vehicle or the possessor’s consent.
Where you still can’t take it
Permitless carry doesn’t override location limits. Utah still restricts firearms in secure areas — courthouses, correctional facilities, airport secure areas, mental health facilities — plus secured federal facilities, houses of worship that give notice, and posted private property. Carrying in your car gets you there; it doesn’t get you inside a prohibited place.
The practical problem: where do you keep it while driving?
Utah makes the legal side straightforward for eligible adults. The practical side is universal: sit down, buckle up, and a hip holster gets pinned under the belt and slow to reach. The usual fallback — dropping the gun in the console or door pocket — leaves it unholstered, trigger exposed, and sliding around.
A cup holder holster keeps the firearm holstered, secured, and within reach in your cup holder. Because Utah allows open carry for eligible adults, a holstered handgun in plain view is fully legal — no concealment gymnastics required. No drilling, and it moves from the truck to the daily driver in seconds.

Frequently asked questions
Can I carry a loaded handgun in my car in Utah without a permit?
Yes — an eligible adult 21+ may carry a loaded handgun in a vehicle they lawfully possess, openly or concealed, with no permit.
Does the gun have to be concealed in Utah?
No. Open carry is legal for eligible adults 21+, so a holstered handgun in plain view — like one in a cup holder holster — is allowed.
What about a passenger’s vehicle or a rental?
Utah ties loaded vehicle carry to lawful possession of the vehicle or the consent of the person who lawfully possesses it. In someone else’s car, get their OK.
Do I still need a Utah Concealed Firearm Permit?
Not to carry in-state at 21+. Many people still get it for its wide out-of-state reciprocity.
